The ERHS girls lacrosse team remained undefeated throughout the 2023 season. The star-studded team won the Prince George’s County championships and the 4A regional championships this year. The team ended with an overall record of 13-2 this season, winning a majority of their games with a 10-point lead. Their record has only improved since last season, as they fell only one game short of the county championship title.  

The coach of the girl’s lacrosse team, Mr.Mills noted that the team ¨returned to a really strong core group¨ and emphasized that ¨the juniors and sophomores definitely stepped up, learned [and] grew throughout the course of [the season].¨ As coach of the illustrious team, he “tries to give opportunities to the players but hold them accountable for small details” because lacrosse “is a team sport and a team is led by captains that the players nominate and the players select, so they need the opportunity to be leaders and [to] help each other out, as well.”

Senior and one of the captains on the team, Emmaly Thompson, expressed how “proud [she is] of how far [they] have come.” As a team, she saw over the course of the season that her teammates “improved on [their] teamwork and [on] basic skills.” Some of these skills include communication with each other, footwork, and strength and endurance. Thompson reflected that during her time as a lacrosse player and as captain on the Roosevelt team that lacrosse “was always a way for [her] to escape and feel loved.”

Itzel Saavedraosorio, a sophomore on the team who began playing her freshman year thought the team “performed the best we could, considering the hardships we all went through.” She hopes that next season she “will bring a more advanced palette of skills and tricks” to contribute to the team’s successes and hopes “to build new relationships among [her] teammates.”
