Early this morning, major news channels announced that incumbent president Barack Obama defeated former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to have a second term as the President of the United States.
After a close battle between the two for control of states, especially Ohio and Virginia, President Obama acquired 303 electoral college votes, while Romney received 206. Many Eleanor Roosevelt students watched the coverage last night.
Freshman Kierra Smith said she watched the election coverage until 2:00 am. She said she was surprised that the President was reelected, but it was not as much of a big deal to her, because it “doesn’t directly affect me.” Smith said that to her family, however, “it was a big deal, and my aunt, she ran around the house when she found out he won.”
Senior Gabe York said he woke up at 10:00 pm and stayed awake for the rest of the coverage.
He said that he preferred President Obama only because of Romney’s opinions on foreign policy. “The parties are very close in most of what they say, there are just minute differences that are magnified beyond belief,” said York.
