This year, 13 teachers joined the faculty at ERHS.
The math department added four new teachers to its roster: Ms. Purcell, who teaches algebra 1, algebra 1 S/T, and trigonometry; Ms. Agus, who teaches algebra 1; Ms. Heimann, who teaches geometry and algebra data analysis; and Mr. Mills, who teaches geometry and pre-calculus.
For Purcell, who student taught here and spent the past few years at MLK, the best part of teaching is “making math not terrible.” Also former student teacher at ERHS, Mr. Mills said he enjoyed his previous weeks here and that his experience with the 2012/2013 school year has “been a blast” so far.
Ms. Agus, a former engineer, decided to come to ERHS because she believes this is the number one school in the area. She says her favorite part about teaching is when her students have those “aha moments.” She previously taught at Oxon Hill High and Thurgood Mashall MS. Ms. Heimann, who teaches geometry and algebra data analysis, said she loves watching her kids learn. She previously taught at Richcrest Elementary and Carrolton Elementary.
In the English department, Mr. Holleran and Ms. Benliza-Ray both joined the staff.
Mr. Holleran teaches ninth and eleventh grade and decided to work at Roosevelt because he says it has a great student body and strong administration. Ms. Benliza-Ray, like the freshman English classes she teaches, is coming from a middle school, and is new to this school. When asked what she like about being an English teacher, she said “I get to do what I love…read”
Three new teachers join the science department this year.
Mr. Rigal, who teaches physics, has been teaching in Prince George’s County for five years. His favorite thing about teaching is “seeing students making progress in Physics,” and he said he has enjoyed his time at ERHS.
Mr. Staggs, a new science teacher from Buck Lodge Middle School, has also been teaching for five years. His favorite thing about teaching here is the students.
In her sixteenth year as a teacher, Ms. Pates, a previous college professor, teaches Chemistry and Integrated Science. When asked about her time here at Roosevelt High School, she says she feels “very satisfied.”
In the language department, Mr. Sierra is the new Spanish 1 teacher. He has enjoyed his last few weeks here and firmly believes that “there is a thing called the Roosevelt way.
Ms. Sheehan, the school’s only Italian teacher, said she is liking her time here at Roosevelt High very much and that she enjoys the well behaved and respectful students.
The music and history departments also each added a member.
The only new music teacher this year is Mr. Kevin Hawk. He teaches all guitar, piano, and recording technology classes. He came to ERHS because he heard our school had a great music program.
Mr. McMillan, the U.S. History teacher, said he has also enjoyed his last few weeks at ERHS and is excited to be a history teacher because he loves history.
