Student Feature: Shaan Singh

If there’s one thing about Shaan Singh, it’s that he doesn’t waste time. The sophomore student is a leader in the classroom, involved in numerous extracurricular activities, and is best known around school for his tech savvy skills.

Singh’s coding and designing passions led him into entering a competition hosted by Apple in which 200 students worldwide were chosen to attend their Worldwide Developer’s conference last spring.

Singh praised Apple as he explained that he was “excited by the possibility of getting a free scholarship to California and being able to meet Apple’s engineers, designers, and executives.”

Singh explained that the process was not easy. “I had only two weeks during school to work on an app about myself that would stand out to the judges.” He continued, stating how he used “interactive maps, animations, physics, and other features to explain [his] education, and goals.”

According to Singh, the conference really encouraged him to further his knowledge in coding and design, as he explained “it was a great experience.”

One of Singh’s notable accomplishments is building a company named Blue Cocoa Inc. that designs websites and applications for clients.

Many of Singh’s peers admire him. Sophomore Sunni Moon said she admires Singh’s technology skills, and stated that “he is also good with people.”

Singh has always been more inclined towards the science and technology field, which is why he said he enjoys taking chemistry, AP Computer Science, and other rigorous courses.

Junior Vinai Rachakonda, a classmate of Singh’s, mentioned that Shaan is “smart and is an inspiration for young people interested in computer science.”

Singh also mentioned that math is one of his favorite subjects, and said “being able to understand how the various pieces of mathematics fit together with the real world interest” him.

While programming and design are his passions, Singh also plays the trumpet in Wind Ensemble, is part of Jazz Band, and plays tennis for the school team and for an out of school team as well.

Singh also enjoys being part of the school’s debate team, as he explained that he and his partner, sophomore Lewis Campbell,  placed fifth in the Washington-Arlington debate league out of over one hundred teams. Shaan proudly stated that “[they] are going to semifinals and have moved up from JV debate to Varsity debate.”

It is evident that Shaan Singh is ambitious in every challenge he takes on. From designing apps, building companies, or serving a wicked backhand, Shaan Singh will not disappoint.
