Summer Watchlist: The New, The Old, & The Underrated

As summer quickly approaches, one thing that plagues many is the possibility of boredom. Fear not! The Raider Review is here to provide you with a WIDE variety of possible binge shows and movies for when school gets out. Let’s jump right in!

  1. Doctor Who (2005): This seems like an odd pick, I know, but this sci-fi show is a guaranteed boredom buster! With 13 seasons, 7 Doctors in this installment alone, countless companions and endless drama, there is nothing I would put higher on my binge list. Watching the whole series, depending on your speed, might take you all summer- and that’s without the earlier and later serieses, spinoffs, and special episodes (which I would also recommend, if you have the time)! I know that might seem daunting, but if you’re tired of finishing shows too early, Doctor Who is the way to go.

  1. The Princess Bride: An oldie, but a goodie. Made in 1987 and still phenomenal to this day, The Princess Bride is a tale of comedy that I would absolutely recommend to anyone at any point of the year. It follows the story of Wesley on his mission to rescue the Princess Buttercup before her wedding, and even features Andre The Giant, a famous french wrestler once referred to as the “Eighth wonder of the world.” It’s a movie that’s fun for all, even for the inconceivably large rats in the forest.

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Coming out in late July, this new installment of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies is set to be one of the most intense. Many believe it is one of the biggest threats Peter Parker has yet to face, and four years after erasing himself from the memories of his loved ones, he has to face it alone. Or does he? Who knows! Let’s watch it and find out.

  1. The Wild Robot: A WILDLY underrated movie, in my opinion. This Dreamworks animated film came out just 2 years ago and is without a doubt in my mind one of the best animated films of all time. It is based on the book series by Peter Brown, set in the post-apocalyptic future as a robot named Roz navigates living in the wild and raising a baby goose after being stranded on an island without any humans. Everything from the voice acting, to the music, to the art style of this movie is to die for, and if you’re a fan of animation I guarantee you’ll love this movie as much as I do.

  1. House Of The Dragon (S3): Premiering June 21st, just 3 days after we leave for summer break, the third season of the Game Of Thrones prequel is set to be a big one, taking place amidst the civil war of the Targaryen family. Most of its events are based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, and showrunner Ryan Condal states this will be their biggest and most ambitious season yet! If high fantasy and intense battle is your thing, House Of The Dragon is for you.

  1. Avatar: The Last Airbender Live Action (S2): Surprisingly, this re-imagination of the classic animated series is really good! It accurately displays key moments and characterizations that the old live-action movies missed. Though it doesn’t hit every mark dead on, as I believe nothing can beat the animation, it is still a fine addition to this watch list if animated shows / movies aren’t really your thing! Season 2 also introduces the infamous Toph Beifong, the greatest earthbender of all time. Who doesn’t like that?

  1. Ted Lasso (S4): Premiering August 5th, this sports comedy follows the life of an American Football coach as he is suddenly asked to help a struggling soccer team, a sport he knows very little about. Using charm, wits, and tasty snacks, Lasso is able to pick the team up off the ground and get the ball rolling. As season 4 approaches, the main character faces uncharted waters and his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team in London.

  1. Elemental: This animated Disney Pixar film from 2023 is one I would consider very underrated. Many believe that Disney’s more recent films have fallen short, but I would argue this one crosses the finish line with little resistance. It’s not a perfect movie, but if you love animation, comedy, drama, and romance in a fantastical world, Elemental is a good movie for you. The art, music, and lighting are spot-on, with true and heartbreaking moments between flecks of happiness, making the entire movie an emotional rollercoaster.

  1. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Also released in 2023, this heist-like high-fantasy comedy follows the tale of Edgin Darvis, a human bard on his quest to retrieve an ancient relic, accompanied by a ragtag band of adventurers he calls his friends and facing surprisingly perilous danger! If animation isn’t your thing but high fantasy is, I would recommend this movie to the moon and back. It features dramatic and tense infiltration sequences, battles, grief, happiness, and more. The movie itself feels like a campaign brought to life, with obvious nat 20s and nat 1s, fun NPC names and lots in-between.

There are a million other new, old, and underrated shows and movies I could recommend to you all, but if I did this article would be far too long. Regardless, this summer-binge-list contains everything you could ever need; old classics, new classics, comedy, drama, animation, sports, live action, and even romance. It will keep you entertained all summer long, and maybe even longer! But remember, no matter what you choose to watch, make sure it’s something that you want. After all, these are just recommendations, and ultimately it is your binge list, not anyone else’s. Have fun, Raiders!
