Model United Nations (UN) is a group made to allow students to simulate the diplomatic and peace-seeking capabilities of the United Nations global organization. Students of all cultures represent the nations of the world during assemblies in colleges across the country, learning skills ranging from teamwork, to public speaking, to writing, and more! They are dedicated to the future of world peace and encouraging civil action, especially in these trying times we currently face.
Junior Oluwamayomide Adeduro, the current president, says that Model UN “represents the idea that young people can, and should, engage with the world beyond their immediate surroundings.” To Adeduro, it connects the space between curiosity and responsibility; “It’s about stepping into someone else’s shoes, understanding perspectives that may be completely different from your own, and learning how global issues connect to everyday life.”
Adeduro also says that, to him, Model UN represents growth, challenging him to broaden his worldview and engage with issues that truly matter. “It’s shaped the way I see myself as a student, and as a human.”
Model UN shows the importance of being confident, articulated, and open-minded when you deal with issues and people from all walks of life. Junior Fafa Kwakou, the Vice-President of Model UN, agrees, stating that Model UN has a very positive impact. “I would highly recommend that people join. It’s a great opportunity for people to develop their diplomatic skills and foster a supportive community amongst diverse ideas.”
The delegates of Model UN are already planning for the 2026-2027 school year (including a conference on April 17th, 2026), ready to expand the number of conferences they attend and encourage students of all grade levels to join in, with applications to become a delegate opening in spring. “It has provided my delegates with newfound considerations for their career paths.” Adeduro added, stating that the experiences the conferences present are an exciting opportunity for all participants.
