After many years of working in the Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant Johnny C Hollis III has started his most recent endeavor teaching aerospace science here at ERHS.
Coming from rural areas and abroad, Chief Hollis has developed the philosophy that “core classes needed to graduate” and “classes used beyond school” should be stressed in education.
Chief Hollis became interested in joining the Air Force in his senior year at Northside High School, and second year of AFJROTC. Drawn in by the “discipline, structure, commodity, and sense of purpose” the air force offered, Chief Hollis enlisted in December 1976, but did not enter active duty until June of 1977. After working 29 years in the air force as an air transportation manager, Chief Hollis retired. He then started working as an AFJROTC instructor in 2005, when he realized he enjoyed teaching about leadership.
After interviewing with two other schools, Chief Hollis interviewed at ERHS. His first impression of the school, including its high graduation rate, gave Chief Hollis “a feeling it was good.” Describing the school as having a “dynamic course variety, and a lot of opportunities,” Chief Hollis saw ERHS as a positive opportunity.
