Women had flourished in the world of sports after the Title IX had been published. Ever since, thousands of women had been taking part in athletics and will continue to do so. Many female athletes had risen to fame in soccer, tennis, basketball and other sports that led them gain fans who support and admire them. This act had inspired young girls in pursuing their athletic dreams and showed that women are capable in competing in the same levels as men.
In “What Caitlin Clark’s Fans Are Missing Out” about Caitlin Clark, it talks about how she surpassed Pete Maravich’s long standing leading score which is very impressive and shows Caitlin’s improvement and talent and how growth in women opportunities. Another article “Sports Offer More than Winning” by Elise Hannum states how athletes are expected to look a certain way besides their performance in the field of sports. These expectations had took the excitement of playing and performing. Elise also points out that these expectations don’t affect athletes the same way others do, but what truly matters is the skill and the joy these athletes experience while doing something they love.
In ERHS women’s sports have been an important part for students in the school for growth and development as well as a start for young girls to pursue a fulfilling career. Girls in ERHS participate in multiple sports like tennis, flag football, soccer, softball and basketball which is a good start to get better and practice.
A student in ERHS as well as a flag football and basketball player states that “As a female athlete, I somewhat think the girls get recognition. I just think that most people find boys more entertaining than girls sports, which lessens the views for girls and there are more views on boys. Girls are acknowledged when we have big events happening or announce. However I think boys have more spotlight, but I do think we get a lot of support from staff.” This tells us that even with their efforts and training girls put into these games, they don’t really get recognized which the school and the teams are trying to help with.
Cassie also tells us “I think if we invited successful female athletes to come to some big events for the sport, it would bring some spotlight to girls’ sports. I also believe that if we advertise more, get more media for girls, and just post more often into the sports pages specifically for girls, it could increase the popularity for more people to come out. I also think mini events to celebrate the athletes could be a way to encourage more looks on female sports. We could also get more people to volunteer, sponsor, etc., as a way to get more people involved.”
This tells us that the school and staff as well as students should try to promote the girls sports more so their talent can get recognized and encourage more people to supports and watch them. Cyril Bowens a student in ERHS also shares with us that “ Women’s sports is becoming more popular, with our school because the teams are actually good, especially when they play against good teams like Flowers, Laurel, Blade. When they play good teams they rise to the occasion and play the game.” This also tells us that in ERHS the girls sports are actually doing great and playing amazing, which makes them rise and compete against more teams.
