Ask Zsyrii: College A or B

Zsyrii Ennis, Staff Writer

I can’t decide where to go to college. I could go to Georgia Tech, which is in the top 10 for all of its engineering programs. Or I could go to the University of Maryland, which is also a good university, but they have better social events. I heard Georgia Tech is a “black hole for happiness” but the academic opportunity is great. These two colleges would cost the same price with a combination of my scholarships. What should I do? Help!

Sincerely, Confused

 Dear Confused,

I think you need to first ask yourself: “What do I want to major in?” and “What college would provide the best academic opportunity that would benefit my major or my interest?” You also have to think about the long run, and which college would benefit you the most. I suggest that you look at what jobs and internships their undergraduate students receive.

If you think that the social aspect would be more rewarding, then that should ease your stress in making a decision. Understanding that you will be in an unfamiliar area and you may not know anyone is important, but that’s something that comes along with adulthood–branching out and exploring places you aren’t exactly familiar with or ones that aren’t that close to home.

You need to also find out what your priorities are and what is financially best for you. If you believe that your social environment is a major priority versus your academics, then try investigating the environments around the colleges and the opportunities that the school would provide. I suggest making a pros and cons list for each college and then having a conversation with your parents, which should help bring you to a conclusion.
