Opinion: Talking to my Dad about the Election

On November 8, Donald Trump was selected as the president-elect for the years of 2017-2021. Half of the United States was in complete shock while the other half were jumping for joy. Many voters chose not to vote this year due to the fact that they disliked both of the presidential candidates.

Joseph Eddy, my father and one of the voters in my home, shared his reaction when hearing the news that Donald Trump became the president-elect. His initial reaction was “one of shock and disappointment,” he said.

“I think the election of Donald Trump is a reflection of the moral compass of America,” he said.

On Donald Trump’s website, it states that he plans to build a wall between Mexico and the United States, and has plans on making Mexico pay for it. My dad then shared his views on immigration issues, saying that “Immigration issues are direct result of the U.S. not having a clear concise path to citizenship.”

Trump believes that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon.” My dad doesn’t “believe in open carry.”

“I believe that in our society today, with our people suffering from different mental illnesses, I feel that there should be some restriction on bearing arms. I believe that open carry is a very intimidating tactic. This is a free and civilized society, and I feel like open carry does not represent that.”

Overall, he said he views Trump as a “narcissist,” continuing on to say that Trump “is a reflection of what America is today.”

“I believe that he is very clever. He has convinced Americans to believe that he supports extreme right-wing views, when in fact over the for the last 20 years, he has publicly supported left wing democratic values.”
