Album Review: Pierce the Veil’s “Misadventures”

This past spring, the punk rock band Pierce The Veil treated their fans with their new album, “Misadventures.” As their fourth released album, “Misadventures” was nothing short of the level of grandeur and lyrical mastery expected of them. The band opened their long awaited album with the song “Dive In,” an intense and exciting build-up to what awaits the listener going forward. The song is a perfect example of how the band combines poignant lyrics, and the dramatic influence of an electric guitar. It is an exemplary segway to the next song, “Texas Is Forever,” which is the fastest song the band has ever recorded. Both electric guitars play the leader in this song, while the drums dictate the fast tempo.

Despite the album’s fast-paced start, the feel of the album slows down a little with the song “Floral & Fading.” Lead singer Vic Fuentes’ songwriting ability shines brightly in this song, as the lyrics weave a story of love and determination. The album continues its powerful melodies with the next two songs, “Phantom Power & Ludicrous Speed” and “Circles.” The latter was written in response to the Paris Attacks in November 2015, the song narrating the story of a boy and a girl trying to escape from the violence. “Circles” is the perfect mixture of vehemence and empathy, the singer’s voice a solid complement to the ultimate creativity of the song. The tone of the album picks up again with the next two songs, “Today I Saw The Whole World” and “Gold Medal Ribbon.”

Fuentes again demonstrates his songwriting skills through the next song, “Bedless.” The song commences with the soft yet distinguished notes of one of the guitars, a clear opposite to the distortion often favored by the band. As the song progresses, the guitar fluctuates between distorted and smooth, with an equal balance of both. As an extravagant yet inspiring culmination, the album ends with two songs, “Sambuka” and “Song for Isabelle.” Both of these songs end the album the way it began; as an exciting mixture of all of the talents displayed in the band. After listening to “Misadventures,” lovers of rock music will be left breathless and yearning for more.
