Tennis: Raiders Backhanding Competition Out of the Way

Cesar Cucufate, Staff Writer

So far this season, the Raiders have taken “sweeping victories” against opponents. They faced High Point High School on March 22, and faced Laurel High School on March 23rd.

Junior Bryce Dubayah stated that these “matches have not been too competitive so far.” The majority of the sets “were won 6-0 or 6-1.” The Raiders beat both Laurel and High Point 9-0, meaning that the team “won all [their] games.”

Their main focus however, are regional and state competition. Senior Mitchell Moore agrees that “PG offers very little competition.” Moore stated that he hopes to “make it to states and get past the first round.” The competition they meet at states means “getting past the first round is always hard for Roosevelt.”

The Raiders are lead by their top players, seniors Bruno To and Lance Jewell. Both have been training hard in preparation for state competition during the offseason and will look to continue their dominance this season.

Senior Maya Thomas said that “Roosevelt are always the tennis champs” and that she expects they “will receive this award again.” In regards to competition in PG County, she said that “Bowie is always our biggest challenge” but that they “hope to beat them 8-0 this year.” So far they are undefeated, and they “hope to keep [their] record.”

The teams’ matches against Duval High School on April 7 and then Bladensburg High School on April 9 were rescheduled due to weather and will be played at a later date in the season.

If the team keeps up the intensity, they should breeze through county competition as usual and be able to place individuals in the state competition.
