William Shakespeare’s classic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is one of the most adapted productions to ever exist. From Thursday, March 17 to Saturday, March 19, the ERHS Drama Department performed their own adaptation of the play.

The play consists of four separate plots going on at the same time. The first plot revolves around Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius, two couples who wish to get married but face a combination of issues in the process. The second is with the rustics, a group of poor actors who are hired to perform a play at Thesius’s wedding. The third plot takes place with the fairies, which include Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the fairies. The fourth and final plot string involves Thesius and Hippolyta, a couple whose marriage connects all four plots.  Throughout all four plots, a mischievous fairy named Puck plays tricks that complicates things for the characters, but adds comedic effect for the play.

According to the performers, the show was a blast. Junior Ash Adams, who portrayed Hermia in the play, said that “It was really a work of love between the cast and crew. We all held each other up, and celebrated all together for all our successes. It was a really fun production to be a part of.” The stage manager, Senior Sarah McCarthy, said that “Overall, it was a fantastic show… we were so lucky to have such a fantastic group of people in our cast, and I was so lucky to be able to work with all of them.”

Adams said her best experience was “hell week, where we stayed after till around 9 every night, but the entire show pulled itself together. It was fantastic.” Senior Damon Barnes was the photographer/videographer for the production and said, “I had a pretty big part in creating/building the set. I stayed after school many days to help build everything from the tree stump, the actual trees, to the actual seating platforms.” McCarthy also chimed in, “I think my best experience with the show was the week leading up to opening night. I loved watching the show come alive.”
