Witty, immature, and bad-ass are all adjectives that can be used to describe Deadpool, the new Marvel film that has been the top film at the box office for three weeks. Unlike most Marvel heroes, Wade Winston Wilson a.k.a Deadpool does not classify himself as a “superhero” and is instead an antihero.  In fact, the whole basis of the movie revolves around his plot for revenge rather than trying to save the world.  The movie posters itself scream “not your average hero” as they portray Deadpool as completely unserious, and use slogans such as “bad ass, smart ass, great ass.”

After a life as a mercenary, he finds the love of his life, a stripper named Vanessa Carlyle who is equally as sarcastic and sex-driven as he is. But his romance is soon stunted when he develops cancer in various parts of his body shortly after, and decides to unknowingly change his life entirely by volunteering himself in an experimental facility where he is mutated, becoming immortal and EXTREMELY unattractive. From there, he’s on the course of finding the man who inflicted this burden on him, Ajax (or Francis as Deadpool prefers to call him) and making him fix it. Along the way, he befriends the only person that could possibly stand his horrid appearance: an elderly, blind, former crack addict named Alice. This unlikely friendship only adds to the humor. The immature yet creative side of Deadpool is what contributes to the humor as well. There was a scene where the antagonist  Francis asks “What’s my name?” and Deadpool literally spells out his name with the dead bodies of Francis’ team.

There could be no better fit for the role of Deadpool than Ryan Reynolds, actor and co-producer of the movie. His perfect balance of overconfidence, sarcasm, and hilariously vulgar comedic relief is what caused the movie to be so funny. However, Deadpool’s character does not entirely consist of crude humor, and there is a depth to his character that can’t be ignored. After becoming a mutant, he is reluctant to return to his former love due to his insecurity that she will no longer love him because of his physical appearance. Not to mention his use of sarcasm as an emotional defense.

Whether it’s for a date, or just with friends (I wouldn’t recommend seeing this movie with your parents), Deadpool is a great film to see if you’re looking for laughs and an unconventional love story.
