Girls’ Varsity Soccer: Mid-season Update

Midway through the regular season,  the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Varsity Girls’ Soccer team is looking just as dominant as expected before the season.

With an undefeated in-county record of 7-0 as of October 6th, the team looks set for a run in playoffs.

When asked what game stood out so far this season, Junior and striker Sheyenne Bonnick noted “the Bowie game. The fact that they were tied with us at half time was worrisome, but we were the stronger team in the end.” Bonnick scored a hat-trick in that game to help the Raiders beat their rivals.

Although the team is doing well, there is still plenty to work on for their final stretch run. Bonnick explained “there are a lot of things we need to work on like spacing, getting to the ball first, and trying not to be impulsive when under pressure.”

Assistant Coach Richard Hanno agreed that the team will have to improve on “keeping possession by not forcing the ball forward” and “looking to switch the field” in order to go far. He also he praised the team “for working harder and focusing more now” because they know the playoffs will be harder this year.

Coach Hanno specifically pointed out sophomore and defender Erika Jackson as a player who has stood out this year and “took on more of a leadership role.” Erika said she can contribute her success and improvement this year to “working hard over the summer and practicing with my club team.” She expressed optimism for playoffs when she said, “I think we will make it to the finals this year and have a really good chance of winning.”
