Raiders Comeback to Tie the Panthers

On Tuesday, September 8th the ERHS boys varsity soccer team came back to tie the Panthers 3-3 in overtime.

The Panthers took an early lead on the Raiders, going up 2-0. But then senior striker Roshawn Panton scored a goal to put the Raiders behind by 1 going into the half.

Midfielder and senior  Jonathan Romero, had a very close shot attempt with 16:25 left to almost tie the game. The ball went back and forth with a few shot attempts but neither team could capitalize. Then, sophomore Baxter Hamilton tied the game with a close up goal with 14:20 left.

The Panthers then rallied to take the lead back from the Raiders, who had to play through a temporary loss of Panton, when he had to be helped off the field due to an injury.

The time was winding down and the Raiders had not scored yet. In the final two minutes junior Lovet Cheg was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty shot. The coach of the Panthers received a red card and was then kicked out of the game due to yelling and accusing the referee of cheating.

When it was finally time for Cheg to shoot the equalizing penalty kick, he said all that was going through his mind was that “I’m going to make it.”  He shot it and scored to tie the game, sending it into a sudden death overtime.

In overtime neither team could quite finish shots to beat the other so the game ended in a draw. Junior Maxwell Walcott said he felt that “moving the ball around more” would have helped them get the edge over the panthers to win.

The key to winning the next tough game is to “run more” at practice, said senior Amgad Kamil.
