On Thursday September 10th, the Eleanor Roosevelt Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team hosted High Point at night in their regular season opener. The Raiders dominated the match, winning by a score of 3 sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-13) to none.

The first set started off strong for the Raiders, who quickly jumped out to a 13-1 lead, thanks to a series of good serves. The team stumbled late in the set, allowing for High Point to come back, but eventually rallied to close out the set 25-23.

The second set started off just as the first, with Roosevelt leading 9-1. Thanks to the play of sophomore, outside hitter Lydia Jones, who helped make a lot of plays on offense, the team was able to control the set and put High Point under a lot of pressure. The team didn’t let up and took the set 25-17.

The third set proved just as dominate as the previous two, with the Raiders putting  together passes and finishing at the net. High Point had no answer to the powerful offense of Roosevelt, losing the deciding third set 25-13.

Coach Eileen Lloyd said the key to the win was that the team “team served aggressively” and “ran their offense well” in order to establish control of the game. She emphasized that the team will continue to work on passing the ball and  improving their offense.

Senior, backrow defensive specialist, Serena Hochmuth, also noted that team’s win was due to “really good teamwork and chemistry,” and that “everyone worked hard and played well,” which made the game easier as it went on.

Jones, who many people said stood out as a dominate player in the game, said “the communication we had on the court” was a reason the team played well and that it is important for them to continue to talk while playing.

This dominate win for the team should set the tone for what looks like a promising season for the Raiders.
