Student Feature: The Dazzling Dallin Johnson

If there’s one thing no one can resist, it’s magic. Even skeptics can’t deny that they are drawn to the mind baffling card tricks and perplexed when an object disappears in mid air.  So to see a crowd gathered around the lunch table of calm and collected Dallin Johnson as he made a once empty can wondrously pour out soda, would intrigue anyone to find out more about this compelling character.

Junior Dallin Johnson has only been doing magic tricks since November but has already received recognition.Fellow lunch table friend junior Sadia Alao admits “when I saw the things Dallin could do, I was astounded.” In response to this generous compliment Johnson humbly shrugged and laughed. “I love magic. It’s a way to connect with people you have never met before.”

Johnson has only been performing magic tricks for the public since November, and according to Junior Alisson Arias “For the time he has been practicing, it’s impressive.” He admits that magic is actually more convenient that one would think. “I love that you can practice it anywhere. I just walk around the house and practice. You can do it with anything, anytime, anywhere.”

Johnson’s favorite magic trick is the one which astonished most of his audience. The soda trick. “You take an empty soda can, crush it, wave your hand over it then soda is poured out.” It sounds simple, but magic proves to be quite the opposite. Johnson even admits his most challenging magic trick is the Valentines Trick. “It’s a cool one. You take a king card and a queen card and make them turn into one.” That’s something to look forward to for Valentines Day.

Besides magic, Dallin has been playing tennis for 5 years and this year is his first time on the ERHS team. He is dedicated in doing community service with his church and is an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scout program. “We go places every month like rock climbing, kayaking, white water rafting, and hiking.” As well rounded as Dallin Johnson is, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he aspires to be a Mechanical Chemical Engineer. “I really like math and science, and I’m not much of a reading person; I like to build things,” he said.

Although his future plans stray from magic, he says he plans to still keep it in the picture. “I love [magic] so much, I hope to keep doing it as a hobby.” As he should because anyone can admit that he has potential. Friend of three years Obeneil Leiva describes Dallin as “a cool guy, and his magic tricks are mind blowing. You expect one thing and he snaps his fingers and another happens.”
