Jethro’s Holiday Gift Guide

Colorful lights, evergreen trees, freezing temperatures, and festive music playing everywhere. These truly are signs that the holidays are here. Regardless of what you celebrate, whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza,  this is a joyous time.  If you still haven’t gotten a present for your friends and family or you’re stumped on what to get them, I can make a few suggestions, with the top holiday gifts of the 2014 Holiday season.

$0-$15

If you want to give presents to your friends and family, but have little to no cash to spend, here are my suggestions for you:

Christmas Cards

Make Christmas cards online and print them

Christmas cards are a simple way of showing someone you care, but the greeting cards you can buy at the store are usually overpriced and heavily marked up, some up to 200 percent. Making your own personalized Christmas card at home is a much better option, because it is absolutely free (besides paper and ink) and the fact that you designed it yourself adds that little personal touch that generic store greeting cards simply do not have. If you happen to have artistic talent, you can make your own card without the use of a computer.

Buy them a pair of Winter Socks

There’s no denying the fact that if you live in certain areas of the United States the weather during the holiday season is cold, and despite modern advances in central heating in buildings, some lack proper insulation to keep its residents warm during the cold winter months. Even houses that do have good heating tend to have cold floors. To fix this problem, buy a pair of winter socks. They serve a double function, besides being highly functional in keeping feet warm, they come in an array of stylish and festive colors and patterns as well. If you shop in the right places, you can find socks for as little as $5 (for example, Plush Socks by Simply Vera Wang at Kohl’s).

Make or Bake them something

Christmas is a time for many festive foods, such as fruitcake and eggnog. Many families also have a traditional recipe that they make together every year. Most baked goods don’t cost more than $15 in ingredients, and all that is needed is your energy, time, love, and care. Besides the fact that they can be absolutely delicious, another advantage to making something at home is that you can make multiple servings, so you can cater to more than one person.

$20-$50

If you have a considerable amount of cash to spend for your friends and family, here are my suggestions for you:

Buy them a Christmas sweater

Usually worn as a joke or for “Ugly Christmas Sweater” contests, Christmas sweaters also make cute, seasonal presents that can keep the wearer warm. They come in an array of different colors and designs and are found in most major retailers. Featured above are Christmas sweaters from H&M, priced at $24.95.

Buy them a pair of sweatpants

What better way to stay comfortable and warm indoors on those cold, winter snow days than with a pair of sweatpants? On those lazy days where you feel like doing nothing other than sleeping and binge-watching Netflix, these sweatpants will be the perfect companion. Just like the Christmas sweaters, they also come in different colors and designs. Featured above are sweatpants from J.Crew Factory, priced at $31.99

Get them a holiday edition scented candle

While scented candles can also be bought for less, the holiday limited edition candles tend to cost more. In my opinion, the price difference is justified as these scents come only once a year and buying the larger versions of these candles allow the buyer to light up the smells of Christmas in their homes all year round. Featured above is the Yankee Candle “Sleigh Bells Ring” candle from the Winter Wonderland Collection, which costs $27.99

$50+

Items in this price range are for those buying a present for someone really special to them, or those with money burning holes in their pockets.

Gucci Ralph Lauren

Buy them a perfume gift set

During the holiday season, high-end fashion designers love to churn out gift sets featuring multiple items in a bundle for a set price. While this price may seem high, it is actually much cheaper than if you’d bought each featured item individually. If you have the money and the person means enough to you to gift this, then by all means, take advantage of the gift set. Perfume gifts sets come from a variety of brands and scents for both men and women. Featured above are the Gucci Guilty gift set (priced at $104 at Macy’s) and the Ralph Lauren Polo Black gift set (priced at $65 at Macy’s).

Get them a watch

With time for this year running out, it is important to keep track of time for next year. And what better way to stay punctual than with a wrist watch? While today’s technology affords us the ability to view the time on our phones and other devices, there is still nothing like a traditional wrist watch, which also looks good. Watches can be found in all price ranges, but the ones that won’t break easily and won’t break the budget are typically found in this price range. Featured above is a Casio G-Shock classic, priced at $130.

Jethro is originally from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, and he plans to return there after high school. His top pick is the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and while he plans to become a Biology major, he plans to write for USC’s campus newspaper, The Daily Trojan, as an extracurricular. Other colleges he plans to apply to are Pacific Union College, the University of California - San Diego, the University of California - Santa Barbara, and the University of Maryland - College Park.

Having read this I believed it was rather enlightening.

I appreciate you spending some time and effort to put this information together.
