Turning Wise naїve, ERHS Varsity football

Facing packed bleachers and cheers heard from miles away, the Roosevelt Raiders football team triumphed to remain undefeated against the Henry A Wise Pumas in a double overtime clash Saturday.

Senior RB Mike Mofor scored the first touchdown of the game, taking it 49 yards for the score. Wise players returned the compliment with a touchdown of their own. On 4th down, Wise decided to punt and junior DB Bob Okoroajuzie blocked the punt with sophomore RB Karl Mofor there to return it for six, putting Roosevelt up 12-6.

Wise replied once again with a touchdown, tying the game up 12-12. As the clock expired towards the end of the fourth quarter, Wise had possession of the ball. A score would give them the victory. Wise sophomore quarterback Jabari Laws threw the ball up towards the end zone but Roosevelt senior CB Confidence Okoroajuzie broke up the pass, sending the game into overtime and giving the Raiders a chance to win.

The Pumas put the first points on the board during overtime and the Raiders came right back with a pass from senior QB Teke Carlson to Karl Mofor. With possession of the ball again, the Raiders went up 26-20 after a touchdown by Mike Mofor. One yard away from the end zone, Wise had the chance to tie the game with a touchdown and get the victory with a extra point conversion. The Raiders defense exploited the hardwork and perseverance they practiced the entire week by denying a score by the Pumas and holding the lead.

After three hours of back-to-back scores and replies in cold, rainy weather, the Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders football team held the Great American Rivalry trophy high, continuing their undefeated campaign. Karl Mofor won the honors of the game MVP and the team, once again, held it down on their home turf.

The Raiders also won the Great American Rivalry trophy in the 2012 campaign when the Raiders also went undefeated during the regular season, edging the Pumas in a last-second field goal by now-alum Cahil Cheavors. This season, they played another heart stopper.
