Wait… POM IS BACK! The ERHS Pom team has returned. Here’s what you need to know.
Pom dance is a high-energy dance style characterized by precise, synchronized arm movements and formations, performed while holding pom-poms. It blends elements of jazz, hip-hop, and cheerleading, focusing heavily on sharp movements, visual clarity, and team unity rather than stunts or tumbling.
Run by Mrs. Powell, who is the coach, and her co-coach, Michelle Philippeaux, Poms has become an absolutely amazing program. Michelle comments on why she chose to be co-coach of the team, saying, “I wanted to help out with the Poms team because it had always been my dream to be on one in high school, even back when I was in middle school. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a team when I got to the school. When Ms. Powell approached me and asked for help, I said yes immediately. Even though I won’t be there to be part of the team, I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute and support it before I leave.” Averie Johnson (an 11th grader at ERHS) says that, “Pom to me is a very high-energy style of performance style which requires a lot of stamina, something I definitely need to work on.” Loving all things dance, Averie “tried out for Pom because it’s such a big skill to have Pom technique in college. And I would love to be on a collegiate dance team.”
Unfortunately, tryouts are over and the team is put together. Fortunately, there’s still next year’s tryouts, which are TBD. You can support our ERHS Pom team at every football game and basketball game halftime. They work very hard, and I know we are all excited to see their hard work in real time. While you’re there, feel free to enjoy the game, and watch your football, basketball, and cheer team also show up and show out.
