This school year the sophomore student Aarav Bhut started Roosevelt’s Hindu Student council. With Mr Koch as their sponsor, the council currently meets once a month in room 236A. This council was created to learn more about different cultures and find a sense of belonging while spreading Hindusims message.
The club will go over various Hindu philosophical and spiritual values as well as doing activites related to those values. Prisha Shah, a junior at Roosevelt says she joined this council “for more recognition on the county level and school-wide level.” In addition, the club will celebrate Hindu festivals like Diwali and Holi with colorful and creative crafts. Mahalet Alenayehu a sophomore at Roosevelt says, “I want to learn more about Hindu culture it sounds interesting.”
In the first meeting, Bhut went over basic Hindu concepts. He mentioned some of the different dieties of the one god, cows being honored because they represent nourishment and life, and what a bindi is. He also covered the belief of reincarnation and the ultimate goal of Moksh which is becoming one with god by doing your duty. In the second meeting, the club celebrated Diwali with painting.
To be a part of this club and it’s activities you don’t have to be Hindu just be open and willing to learn about this culture and its traditions. If you’re interested, look out for emails from Aarav Bhut and join their next meeting!
