The holiday season is right around the corner, people heading outside to look at the lights, decorating their homes, and having family gatherings with hot cocoa on the side. But wait… You can’t forget about playing Christmas music, that’s what sets up the spirit to bring the old nostalgia… Did you know people only listen to Old Christmas music to get into the spirit and not today’s. Many say the classics are what brings smiles on their face.
Many students in ERHS say they feel “comfortable” or have “good memories” with the old Christmas music, some specific are: “All I want for Christmas is you” by Mariah Carey, “Jingle bell rock” by Bobby helms, and “Last Christmas” by Wham. These songs carry joy and make you feel magical.
These songs are still used today everywhere and have been passed down generation to generation. Into Christmas movies like Home alone, Daddy’s home. Even the popular kiss commercial that plays Jingle Bells. Even when you’re around family you go on spotify or apple music and search up christmas hits.
These songs all have a meaning behind them. Everyone has a christmas song that just feels personal to them, Adriana Ayala Gonzalez a sophomore in ERHS stated “My favorite christmas song is Underneath the tree by Kelly Clarkson because it’s very upbeat and happy. I just love the feeling it brings me.”
Another point of view that Dreama Stannard, a Junior in ERHS stated “ silent night is a good one. It sounds so soft, so smooth and beautiful. It’s very nostalgic and brings so many memories to me.” “Something specific about just that song heals me, no other Christmas song.. Especially today’s holiday music just can’t cover it.”
On the other hand, today’s Christmas music is not really listened to or talked about. It’s usually the same song and just a cover by popular artists like Laufey, Ariana Grande and Taylor swift. Who we normally love but it’s not the same vibe we usually get from the other songs. They aren’t as nostalgic or have a good rhythm to it. It’s usually pop christmas music or rapping, Angel velasquez, a freshman student at ERHS stated “The beat is different, like you just don’t feel the music like you do with the old hits”.
Today’s Christmas music just tries to keep up with trends from generations of today. Which people only focus on for a couple of months because it’s either funny or has a nice beat. But the artists aren’t really creating music to listen to constantly every holiday year, An anonymous sophomore student at ERHS stated “ when have we really ever heard a good christmas song from today, they usually turn into a meme online or become popular for a few weeks then it’s forgotten”.
In the end, new Christmas songs will always be given a chance but the classics will always be on repeat. So, we may continue to create new memories over our favourite songs during the holidays. And to keep Christmas alive with its natural magical spirit.
