Are you interested in art and want to try out a new hobby? Look no further, this 25-26 SY, ERHS introduces a new Ceramics Club that is open to all! Ceramics Club meets semi-monthly in room 122 on Thursdays and is a great opportunity to expand on your creativity.
Well, what is done in Ceramics Club? In Ceramics Club, there are many opportunities to let your creativity flow. Each month, there is a different project with a specific theme that depend on the season or holidays. Based on the theme, you are able to create sculptures out of clay and paint them to take home. This includes things like dishes, bowls, and plates. Typically, there will be two sessions, one to sculpt and the next to paint and decorate.
Subusola Dada, a junior at ERHS and Co-President of Ceramics Club, wanted to start up ceramics because she “believe[s] in the power of creativity and hands-on art to bring people together.” She shares that Ceramics Club gives students the opportunity to “create a space where everyone can learn, express themselves, and find a sense of community.” Angelina Wiseman, a junior at ERHS and the other Co-President of Ceramics Club, says they want to leave behind a space where “creativity and community can thrive” as well as a place “where students feel proud to be part of something lasting.” Ceramics Club offers the opportunity to open yourself up and experiment with different designs and materials. Wiseman says it is a “hands-on process” that allows you to turn “nothing into something meaningful.”
As of now, small items are being made, but Wiseman shares that some future projects include “sculpting plates and bowls, candle holders, and trinket dishes.” Some more future activities involve potlucks, organizing donations, and even some fundraisers.
Even if you are not as interested in the arts, Ceramics Club is still an amazing opportunity to get to know your peers and build connections through hands-on processes. Lianna Geronimo, junior and Communications Manager for Ceramics Club, emphasizes that it’s “a great place to wind down after a long school day and get your mind off of everything” while having fun with your friends. It never hurts to try something new. No prior experience is needed; Wiseman says that the most important thing is “curiosity and a willingness to try.” Whether it’s something that sticks or a one-time thing, Ceramics Club is worth a try.
