The Volleyball Club is a long-running often overlooked part of sports at Eleanor Roosevelt. But since the interest meeting just last week, interest has been stoked in ERHS volleyball for both male and female students. And after the Varsity Girls Volleyball team’s wins, the stage seems to be set. But if there’s so much interest and the girls’ team is already so prominent, why ISN’T there already a team for boys and other players?
For starters, it can’t be the lack of interest in ERHS students. The Volleyball Club has had regular meetings throughout the summer and previous school years, bringing in a decent amount of new members and securing mainstay members throughout its run. They’ve been participating in and working towards scrimmages, like games with Calvert Hall High School.
It also couldn’t be a lack of skill for the current members of the club. Multiple members have shown great growth even without school sponsored training.
Then, what could it be? What could be inhibiting a boys volleyball team from being created?
Coach Scott Fifield, former girls volleyball coach, says that “There are many logistical things that would impede this process…”, Well, what does he mean by that?
The Athletic Handbook for PGCPS states that 50% of the high schools in the county must have a club or intramural team that has been active for at least one season. With thirty high schools in the county, we need fourteen other schools with other active boys or co-ed volleyball teams. Even if this is a difficult undertaking, it’s possible.
As of last Friday, the club confirmed that both High Point and Duval actually have a volleyball club. That means the club needs to just confirm that twelve more schools have active volleyball clubs, and we may be able to establish a league.
And now you, the reader, can help! Reach out to your friends who go to other PGCPS high schools, and ask them if they have any active volleyball clubs. With enough support, we can establish boys volleyball as a real team, so that all students can participate in a volleyball league.
