With COVID-19 cases gradually declining, Roosevelt students are starting to see school return back to normal. Activities like October’s homecoming, including the parade and pep rally, which were dead during the pandemic, are finally coming back. Roosevelt has also seen events like January’s talent show and the seasonal Coffee House return, and is looking forward to many more exciting events.

Mr. Taylor, 12th grade administrator, believes that “things are back to normal for the most part.” Senior class president Praise Odiaka added, “We’ve been able to have our pep rallies in the gym again” and have also “been able to host other events such as the talent show and multicultural night.” On March 30th, the Eleanor Roosevelt Korean Club will be holding a showcase. A multicultural night will also occur in April.

Before the pandemic, Roosevelt had an abundance of clubs, sports, and schoolwide events for students to participate in, but when COVID-19 came around, there was a pause in many of those events. Even last school year , many clubs and after-school events had severe restrictions. This prevented them from gaining the energy and support they had in pre-COVID years.

Yet, underclassmen have not known any different. Sophmore Danielle Hsu said current “school events aren’t bad” and can be “pretty fun.”

Odiaka says that still “safety measures” for events “have changed” and the school has to be “cautious of how many people are allowed at these events.” He noted that event concessions must be pre-packaged, which has limited the variety of treats they are able to sell.

Though some of these events have changed, many are happy to see signs of the old Roosevelt. “All the upcoming events look extremely promising!” says Odiaka. He also gives a tease on some of these events, including the spring pep rally, stating that the plans “are being drafted up” and that “it’s definitely something you don’t want to miss out on.”
