On Saturday, October 19th, ERHS held the Raider Relay Run, a fundraiser for the Cross-Country team here at ERHS.

There were two races, the 200 meter elimination run and the Raider Relay Run. The 200 meter run consisted of multiple 200 meters dashes, with an elimination every time until one person was left standing. The Raider Relay Run was a relay race in which each team  of two runners ran three miles.

Junior Creedence Jackson ran and won the 200 meter elimination race which added up to two miles at the end. “It feels pretty good. As people start to drop out[,] it gets harder to keep your place. So you have to keep pushing harder and harder and you really feel it in your calves.”

Senior Muzzamil Khan and Abraham Cutler collectively won the 3x mile part of the Raider Relay Run. Each member of a team of two ran three miles. Cutler, who runs at Gonzaga High School, said that “[thought they] were a bit overpowered because I hadn’t run at ERHS before so I was placed at the bottom of the rankings, which is why I got paired with such a good person. ”

Khan explained that the Raider Relay Run and Fundraiser helps “predict top place finishes for counties and regionals. As for states, this shows that we have the potential to earn some well deserved recognition. The future of this team depends on us doing well so it’s great to see everyone out and about running fast.”

Coach Nayda Pirela explained that the Raider Relay run helps the Cross Country team as fundraising money will help, “make it easier for us to travel and pay for our end of the year celebration. We want to get more people out every year. This gives an opportunity for teachers, students, family members, parents to come to our house, Eleanor Roosevelt High School and see our runners perform because all of our meets are not on school grounds. You don’t need to be fast [to come] even [to] join our team you don’t have to be fast. We just try to get everybody to come on out, because what we’re really trying to do in the grand scheme of this is to create a certain culture where we celebrate it [as] it’s not normally celebrated throughout P.G County.
