Wednesday December 6,  the Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders basketball team lost their season opener on the road to the  DeMatha Stags basketball team. The Raiders fell behind early in first quarter and headed to halftime down 47-25. The Stags would continue to play well in the second half, and finish with connecting as a team on 12 three-pointers, the final score 86-49. However, this is only one loss with the season just beginning, with plenty of chances to bounce back.

Roosevelt’s Cameron Brown leads the team in scoring with 15 points and said: “it gave us a chance to see where we stack up against one of the best teams in the area.” Also, when asked about ways to improve and do better, he said “we all just need to play harder defensive and just play basketball, not think so much”.

Junior guard Jaamir Butler provided the Raiders with  12 points off the bench connecting several 3 pointers. Butler described the game as “a wake-up call and shows us how hard we need to play this season”, he said,  “ I feel like I can play better defense, hustle, and continue to knock down shots.” Jaamir mainly focused on making good use of his minutes and helping the team, focusing on his “want to try to make my team and my teammates better when I get my chances.”

The exciting rivalry game between DeMatha and Eleanor Roosevelt to open each other’s seasons has become almost like a tradition within the last few years. Furthermore, the  Raiders look to have a plan to bounce back Saturday December 9th against Perry Hall High School.
