New Club at ERHS: FIDM

Most students have never even seen a sewing machine, but now there is a club teaching the basics to a handful of student designers who aim to create their own attire.

On Thursdays, the FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) club meets in Room 020 to learn sewing and design with the end goal of designing clothes for a fashion runway show at the end of the year in the auditorium.

The club is led by president Ambe McKinney and vice president Ciara Haith, who are both seniors. According to club sponsor Ms. Monique Connelly, the new club is modeled after FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California.

“I started an interest in streetwork, which led me to seeking other areas of fashion,” McKinney said, explaining his motivation for starting FIDM.

Haith has similar sentiments. “I’ve been interested in fashion since I was younger, and when this club came along I knew that Roosevelt doesn’t have anything like this, so let’s do it!”

Derica Compton, a junior who has joined the club this year, said that “I love fashion, and I feel like I’m expressing myself through art, I can get a lot of fashion experience and learn more through fashion.”
