Mr. Tyler Shellhamer is a new math teacher here at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. He has taught for the past four years, but started teaching at Prince George’s County Public Schools just two years ago.

Mr. Shellhamer previously taught at Bladensburg High School, before he arrived at ERHS this year. He came here because he “felt like [he] needed a change of scenery…so far [his] experience is good. The people [he] work[s] with are great and helpful. The administration has been kind. And the students have been good so far!”

He is originally from Pennsylvania, where he attended Kutztown University. He said, “I majored in Secondary Education with a focus in Mathematics.”  Before he became a teacher, his last occupation was “actually working at [his] college. [He] was a tutor, connections caller, and [he] was an intern at the credit union on campus.”

He became interested in teaching at PGCPS because they “[were] a participant of a job fair [his] college was having.” He said “I interviewed with them and I signed off on a job to start in PGCPS the following school year (SY 15-16), that’s how I ended up in MD.” Right now, Mr. Shellhamer teaches Algebra 1 and Geometry.

His personal goals to accomplish this school year are to “stay planned ahead with [his] planning,” and “make [himself] an integral part of this school.”

When asked about his teaching style, Mr. Shellhamer said that he is “still trying to figure that out, to be fairly honest. What I tend to do is an “I do-we do-you do” style, I walk through a problem as a demonstration, work another problem through together, then the students do one on their own.”

D’andre Leid, a sophomore taking Geometry, said that “I think Mr. Shellhammer is an overall good guy and good teacher.” Leid’s first impression of Mr. Shellhamer was that he was “stern and serious…however he is very calm and quiet for the most part and seems pretty happy all the time.”

Ashanti Fullen, a freshman Algebra 1 student said that he thinks Mr. Shellhamer “is very fun, but pretty quiet sometimes. He’s a really nice person…he seems like a chill teacher, but he is also serious when need be.”
In his free time, Mr. Shellhamer said that he enjoys cooking and trying new things.
