Mr. Matthew Levy is a Maryland local and a graduate of University of Maryland College Park who is currently teaching his first year of World History and LSN Government at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

Mr. Levy is no stranger to teaching. He taught for eight years at Crossland High School, located in Temple Hills. During his time there he taught US History and later worked his way up to LSN Government and AP World History. Mr. Levy has always been interested in history, but originally was not going to teach the subject.

“The plan was for me to be a math teacher,” Mr. Levy explained. He went into college studying Mathematics and Education but decided to go on a different path once he began to take higher level Calculus, even though he only wanted to teach Algebra. Eventually Mr. Levy began studying History and Government, the subjects that interested him the most. “His wide array of qualifications made him right for the job,” said Ms. Terita Pottinger, the head of the Social Studies Department at ERHS.

In his free time Mr. Levy enjoys literature and is a fan of J. Robert Kennedy’s historical fiction novels. He also works with UMD’s Athletics Department in the fall. Idamis Diazcalo, a junior in Mr. Levy’s World History class, said that he has “a different teaching style than other social studies teachers,” and even though she doesn’t necessarily enjoy history, she looks forward to his class everyday in the morning.

Mr. Levy is enjoying his time teaching at ERHS: “The kids here are energetic and bright.”
