Big Ten College Football Dilemma
December 8, 2016
The College Football Playoff selection committee is being tasked with an increasingly difficult decision as the football season continues.
In college football, the top four teams are sent to the CFB Playoffs where they compete for the National Championship. But these rankings are not solely based on records, which is the case in most sports. Teams are ranked based on championships won, their strength of schedule, the results of head-to-head competition and the comparative outcomes of common opponents. The other factor in deciding who the best teams are is the “eye test.” This is an unofficial process where members of the committee watch game film and break down which teams they believe will have the best chance to win a championship.
With all the criteria laid out, there is an argument being made with the decisions regarding two teams, Ohio State and Penn State.
Sitting atop the rankings, above the rest, is No. 2 Ohio State. They have made it out of their season with an 11-1 record, after playing the toughest schedule in the nation. The Buckeyes also have arguably the most accomplished resume of any of the teams in the country. They have convincing wins over No.6 Wisconsin, No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 23 Nebraska. And last weekend, Ohio State and No.5 Michigan played in possibly the best game of the year, where Ohio State pulled off the win after two overtime periods. However, the one loss on their record came to a conference rival in a special teams thriller, Penn. State.
The Nittany Lions are the No.7 ranked team in the nation, with a 11-2 record. While Penn. State does have two losses, they were early on in their season, and they were to respective teams in No. 5 Michigan and an unranked Pitt team who also upset the Wolverines. After starting the season 2-2, Penn State has gone on to win 8 straight conference games, led by Big Ten Offensive Player and Running Back of the Year Saquon Barkley. This was no easy task as they had the 14th toughest schedule in college football. And with their 45-12 victory over Michigan State, they earned a spot in the Big Ten Championship against No. 6 Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions put on an impressive performance with a comeback victory to win the title for the first time since 2005.
Both teams have had accomplished seasons, but there are only four spots in the CFB Playoff bracket. Ohio State fans argue that they have earned a spot with their near perfect record after a very tough season. And to many football fans, the Buckeyes win the “eye test.” Penn State fans, however, also have a compelling argument. After the win over Wisconsin, they have a conference championship and a head-to-head win over Ohio State.
Here lies the difficult decision the committee has before them. Do they chose a team that football fans believe is better after demolishing the best competition the country has to offer? Or do they go with a Penn State team who conquered the beast that is the Buckeyes, as well as the rest of the Big Ten?
The committee has some work to do.
