With the score tied, and the last seconds of the game deteriorating, senior forward Jesse Ason calmly threw a perfect bounce pass leading his front court counterpart perfectly to the rim.
Future Holy Cross senior forward Malachi Alexander threw the ball through the rim with an emphatic dunk to end the game and give the raiders the Prince George’s county city championship at Henry H. Wise high school Wednesday evening.
To the dismay of many Wise spectators and students, the Raiders left the court with a final score of 69-67 in the school’s first county championship since 2000, and their first win in the county championship game ever.
Head Coach Brendan O’Connell credited the success to a halftime adjustment. “We were just trying to make every defensive stop,” he said. “We talked about settling down after so many turnovers in the first half due to their aggressive defense.”
As for the playoffs, O’Connell said the Raiders “are trying to win that first game. All our players are focused on that one game.”
The Raiders start playoff play at home next Thursday.
