Six of our Eleanor Roosevelt student-athletes and the school bocce team placed second in the county championship this week.
Bocce, originally an Italian sport, is played w
ith metal and plastic balls. Teams can be made up of two, three or four players on competing sides.
The Prince George’s county bocce tournament places the two top teams from a northern and a southern region of the county. The teams consist of a blend of regular and special education students.
Unified sports, under the Special Olympics, sponsored the bocce team as well as softball and track and field events.
ERHS’s bocce team includes of Majita Aminu, Saharah Baker, Gabriella Barrett, Julia Briggs, Malcolm Coker, and Stephen Newman, coached by Mr. Ja-mel Whitaker, a current sign-language interpreter here at ERHS.
Mr. Whitaker credited the team’s’ success to their “determination to work together.”
