“Infinity” by One Direction: Bonus Track Review
October 13, 2015
On September 22, One Direction shocked fans by announcing the release date to their fifth studio album Made in the A.M. With this, came a bonus track titled “Infinity,” as the second song off the new album. Audiences have already been raving about the track, calling it both “beautiful” and “heartbreaking.”
The release of “Infinity” came at a very interesting time in the career of One Direction. After the abrupt exit of former band member Zayn Malik earlier this year and the band’s impending hiatus in March 2016, their run seems to be anything but infinite. Despite these changes, One Direction has promised their avid fans that they are “not going anywhere.” Compared to their latest single “Drag Me Down,” which peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Infinity” topped the Trending 140 chart on its release day. To contrast the two, “Infinity” is highly emotional, whereas “Drag Me Down” is much more anthemic.
“Infinity,” features writers Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, and Jamie Scott, who collaborated on such hits as “Story of My Life” and “You and I” from One Direction’s third album Midnight Memories. The track is in essence a love song, describing the confusion between lovers as well as a longing for answers. It is clearly evident that the song is well-written, with subtle paradoxes like “And now I’m one step closer to being two steps far from you.”
Melodically, the track speaks for itself. With a combination of single guitar picks and the voice of band member Niall Horan, “Infinity” begins. The guitar then becomes heavier and combines with a drum backtrack. Near the end, the song transitions to a more electronic sound of synthetically-mixed beats. As the word “infinity” is repeated along a short violin progression, the track comes to a close. All these individual elements work to create a song that is pleasing to the listener. After listening to “Infinity,” I could not be more satisfied with its outcome.
As for One Direction’s future, the band is currently wrapping up what seems to be their final tour, as no concert tour is scheduled for 2016. They play their last show of the “On the Road Again Tour” on October 31, in Sheffield, England.
Their new album, Made in the A.M., is set for release on November 13.
