This past week, ERHS has continued its step in becoming a green school by recycling plastic grocery bags, an event organized by the Environmental Club. Students could drop off bags in the front of the school to have them recycled.
“We are trying to expand the amount of recycled materials and [encourage] the staff to reduce the number of copies,” said Ms. Stern, the sponsor of the Environmental Club, in reference to becoming a green school.
On Friday ERHS students and staff celebrated America Recycles Day (although the actual date for this day was Saturday Nov. 15,) by wearing green to school. This day was developed by the nonprofit Keep America Beautiful. Additionally, the Environmental Club hung up small notices around the school reminding students to recycle.
“I think its great that people are becoming more involved and alert about recycling because it is our job to preserve the earth,” said junior Sadia Alao.
Besides recycling, the Victory Garden has also had a positive impact at school. ROTC students have helped to maintain the Victory Garden for over two months now.
ROTC member Jared Alindogan is one such student, and said he admires that “we’re having more opportunities and volunteers to come out and help”.
Ms. Stern said she is trying her best to get more students and staff involved in becoming more aware, and that she has seen a positive change.
“I think a lot of people want to do something for the environment but don’t know where to start,” said Ms. Stern.
She also encourages more students to come out to the Environmental Club and help make a change. The Environmental Club meets Thursdays after school in Temp 8.
