The ERHS Drama Department is performing a rendition of the award-winning Broadway musical, “Hairspray”.
The story of “Hairspray” takes place in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962, a time when racial discrimination was widely present in America.
It follows pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad as she wins a role on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program, where white people and black people are not allowed to perform together. The social injustices found in America at the time are the focal point of the play, which adds humorous commentary.
The cast members, who meet every day after school, are working very hard to put this production together. Collectively, the actors and other participants said that their experience working on the show is enjoyable.
Sophomore Maeve Kelley Baker, who plays Edna Turnblad, the mother of main character Tracy Turnblad, said that her experience working on Hairspray was “Fun, and everyone is super nice.” Senior William Perez, who plays Baker’s goofy on-stage husband Wilbur Turnblad, also describes his experience as “Fun, but busy,” adding that he has “no free time since I’m on call everyday.”
Junior MerryRose Howley, who will play antagonist Amber Von Tussle, invites everyone to “Come see the show!”
“Hairspray” will be performed in the ERHS Auditorium on November 14, 15, 21, and 22.
