PGCPS moved to standardized bell schedules in order to improve bus transportation. This made a change in the bell schedule for 2024-2025 school year of Eleanor Roosevelt High school. Last school year of 2023, ERHS started at 8:45 a.m. Currently Roosevelt falls under tier two which starts at 8:30 a.m. The change creates a three-tier system. First tier starting at 7:30 a.m., tier two starting at 8:30 a.m., and tier 3, starting at 9:30 a.m for all PGCPS elementary, middle and high schools.
CPS reported that the majority of schools are seeing no difference or change with the new bell schedule, with only a 15 minute change , students, teachers, and parents are still being affected.
Karen Bowers, a ASL teacher at ERHS noted that the bell schedule is more preferable for her. Ms. Bowers explains “I am a morning person so I love starting early and love that we get out earlier too! I’m not a teenager though and I know teens would prefer to sleep late!” Currently Ms. Bowers benefits from the new bell schedule, while she also pointed out that she had almost memorized the schedule from last year and how she’s now re-learning the new current bell schedule with the new times for this year. Ms. Bowers has also noticed that the student bus riders arrive earlier than the car riders and walkers.
While students also benefit from the new bell schedule, Junior, Randall Guzman at ERHS noted “ I believe the bell schedule change was necessary due to the limited availability of bus drivers. I have noticed a difference, my bus is always here on time.” The bus coming earlier than last year is a benefit for Randall Guzman and other bus riders , since last year the buses would come late and not on time. Randall Guzman also noticed that there is more time to learn and more time to do your work.
A senior at ERHS, Christopher C. stated “It kinda benefits me, because I got more time to spend on myself after school or spend time with my friends.” There is both some pros and cons to this situation because he also mentioned “The only thing that I do not like are the lines in the morning to get into the building.” For some student’s it might be an advantage to leave school early in the afternoon and have more time to do things. Some student’s come in early, on time and end up being late because of the lines to pass through the metal detectors.
The new bell schedule somehow benefited some students and teachers. Although there are pro’s and con’s, it seems like this change was helpful to the ERHS community.
