ERHS Track Strides Towards Success
June 7, 2023
One of the most popular spring sports is Track and Field. This school is fortunate to have such a dedicated and hardworking group. The team is led by their esteemed head coaches, Coach Diamond and Coach Elgin, all while accompanied by their special field event coaches, Coach Z, Coach Horn , and Coach Scoops.
Track is very diverse and there are many events taking place at the meets to highlight everyone’s individual abilities. This season was great for the students at ERHS as they went as far to compete in county tournaments, regionals and states. Some had the chance to showcase themselves in the Penn Relays, which is the largest track and field meet in the country.
There are many common misconceptions about track and field, where some may consider the sport to be lazy. ERHS discus and shot put event-thrower, Tatiyana Black, emphasizes that ¨track isn’t easy, everyone says all we do is run- and that running takes no skill, but it’s way more work than that.” At each meet you strive to be better than your last, whether that means throwing farther, or running faster, everyone is determined to beat their PR (personal record). Those who wish to continue on with this sport in college know PR’ing at meets is a top priority.”
ERHS 4×4 runner Destani Hebron was successful in this challenge and exclaims “I’m proud of myself because I PR´ed at some of the meets and that’s not easy to do. You really have to push yourself and practice hard!”
Although progress is personal, the team made a huge comeback from the 2022 season. They were faced with many adversities, but with great team chemistry and strong leadership the team was able to achieve greatness and continually give the Eleanor Roosevelt Track and Field program a great name.
