Colonel George Ryan is the newest edition to the staff in Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, and is now the chairperson of Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFJROTC).
Massachusetts native Colonel Ryan has fond memories of taking ROTC in high school.
“The country means a lot to me,” said Colonel Ryan, “I want to help high school students…realize how fortunate we are to be where we are.”
Though Colonel Ryan has never taught in public schools, he was an instructor in the Air Force for some time. Having served 38 years in the Air Force and Secret Service, he has plenty of fundamental military knowledge to pass on to the students.
Sophomore ROTC student Miquel Swann described Ryan as “real, real formal,” and smiled as he recalled being scolded by Colonel Ryan during a uniform inspection.
Sergeant Hicks, was enthusiastic that he and Colonel Ryan had previously served two assignments together without knowing it. Hicks described his respect for Ryan and said that he “absolutely” works well with the staff.
And Colonel Ryan returned the favor, calling the students and staff “tremendous,” and deeming his time at ERHS as already a “positive experience.”
